With a vast variety of products on the market, all with numerous claims, sometimes developing, maintaining, and updating a successful skin routine can be problematic. A common question or concern of patients is how to develop a customized routine that will effectively address their individual issues. A proper skincare regimen will ensure that your skin looks and feels its best, eliminating damage and signs of aging.
Here is a guide of typical skincare product categories for the basic upkeep of your skin. If you have additional skin concerns, you may need to add other products for effective treatments. The best protocol is to meet with your esthetician to customize your skincare treatment plan.
Skincare Products Overview
Cleanser: Cleansers serve to remove makeup, oil, and other unwanted debris. Proper cleansing reduces acne, helps the skin stay properly hydrated, and helps other skincare products work more effectively. Washing with water alone isn’t enough, and using regular soap can lead to excessive dryness and irritation. (We recommend the RSC Green Tea Cleanser)
Exfoliators: Exfoliators remove dead skin cells that build up on the surface of the skin, helping to reveal a fresh new layer on the surface. Exfoliating regularly helps keep the skin looking youthful and feeling smooth. Some exfoliating products contain alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) or beta hydroxy acid (BHA) which control the development of acne and other skin blemishes. (We recommend either the RSC Gly/Sal pads or RSC Glycolic Pads)
Acne Products: Topical based acne products kill acne causing bacteria (P. Acnes) and reduce acne associated redness and inflammation. The most common OTC acne treatment products contain benzoyl peroxide, a known bacterial killer. Other standard products for acne contain Tretinoin or Retin-A, a product to increase cellular turn-over and remove dead skin. For more severe acne, topical and oral anti-biotics are sometimes prescribed. (We recommend the RSC Acne Kit, containing both Retinol and Benzoyl Peroxide based products)
Skin Lightening Products: Skin lighteners, usually used once daily, reduce the skin’s production of melanin, the source of pigmentation related issues. Skin lightening products gradually lighten the darker skin over a 6-12 week period. Hydroquinone works by reducing brown spots and other discolorations by suppressing the cell that is over-reacting and causing the pigment to darken. (We recommend the RSC 4%-8% Hydroquinone Skin Brightening Pads)
Anti-Aging Products: Serums containing both human and plant based growth factors, antioxidants, retinoids, and other anti-aging ingredients can stimulate collagen production and cellular turn-over. Regular use of these products will work to minimize wrinkles and reduce sun damage. Many of these treatments also prevent skin damage and aging from various environmental factors. Anti-aging products work best in combination with medical grade esthetic services as well as dermal toxins and fillers. (We recommend the RSC Customized Tri-Youth protocol, containing RSC Retinol Pads, RSC Night Time Moisturizer containing Plant Stem Growth Factor & Regenica Human Growth Factor products)
Sunscreen: An essential product for daytime use to moisturize and protect the skin from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. We recommend the use of a broad-spectrum sunscreen (which protects the skin from both UVA and UVB rays) with an SPF of 15 or higher. Protecting your skin from the sun can reduce several signs of aging, including wrinkles and age spots. The best way to protect skin from the sun is to physically block the rays with a hat or umbrella. (We recommend the RSC Oil Free Sunblock)
Moisturizer: Moisturizers in any form (cream, gel, or liquid) improve the skin’s overall functioning, keeping it feeling smooth and soft. Daily use has been shown to help the skin look and feel healthier. Use of a topical hyaluronic acid will aide in hydrating the skin. This ingredient works for any skin type, including those that are acne prone. (We recommend the RSC Ultra Lite Cream)
